Mood Disorders, Migraines and MTHFR Gene Testing

By Sam Botica, Naturopath

Plagued with anxiety, low moods or migraines? Tried pharmaceutical medications, counseling and even diets, without much relief? It might be time to look at your genes.

For some people, anxiety, mood swings and migraines are a curse they live with for years. Some medicate, practise yoga, exercise regularly, take herbal medicines or pharmaceutical drugs, with marginal improvement. Others try and find solace in alcohol or recreational drugs, or resort to not leaving the house.

Well, if this sounds like you, it might be worth testing for the MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) gene mutation. This mutation affects between 1 in 5 people, and it means you’ll have problems metabolising B group vitamins, especially Folic Acid. Folic Acid is really important in the production of seratonin, dopamine, melatonin and many other chemical processes in your body.

Having variations in this MTHFR gene can lead to mood disorders, migraines, insomnia, ADD/ADHD, fibromyalgia, cardiovascular diseases, recurrent miscarriages …. there’s quite a list!

And while we can’t change our genes, we can change the way they’re expressed.

Put simply, MTHFR gene mutations mean your body can’t break down Folic Acid to a form your body can use. This leads to a toxic build up in your system, which leads to a myriad of other health problems.

If you have a single or double mutation of the MTHFR gene, then Folinic Acid (the active form of folate) and in some cases B12 and B6 can really improve your symptoms.

So, if you want to test for this, I can advise on how best to proceed, and if you have this mutation …. don’t worry, you will get the appropriate supplement, along with diet and lifestyle tips, to help you manage it all, and feel better.

  1. I’ve suffered from 3 miscarriages without explanations, plus I am always stressed, I suffered from absent seizures that respond to no medication at all and now the drs think they may actually be stress related seizures. Been researching MTHFR and not sure if this may be my answer.

We finally found a clinic!! After changing Doctors – GP because our Doctor told us that our family were all paranoid. This was the last straw especially when my Mother is dying of cancer.
Thank you, we will be in touch to make an appointment.

    Kind regards

  3. I wanted to draft you one little bit of word just to
thank you so much as before considering the splendid techniques you’ve
discussed here. It was so unbelievably open-handed with people like you to
allow openly just what most of us would’ve supplied for an ebook to make
    some dough for themselves, specifically
considering that you could have tried it in case you considered necessary.
These tips as well served like the easy way to be sure that many people have a similar
zeal just like my personal own to grasp much more
when considering this problem. I am sure there are many more
enjoyable opportunities up front for those who start reading your blog post.

  4. Merely to follow up on the up-date of this issue on your web-site
and would wish to let you know how much I loved the time you took to put together this valuable post.
In the post, you really spoke on how to actually
handle this matter with all convenience. It would be my personal pleasure to collect some more suggestions from your site and come as
much as offer some others what I discovered from you.
Thanks for your usual great effort.
