What is the IVF cycle?
In Vitro Fertilisaiton (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART). This process involves the retrieval of a sperm sample and the extraction of eggs. The eggs are then fertilised in an IVF lab to create embryos. The embryos are then transferred back into the uterus.
The distinguishing difference between an IVF cycle and a regular menstrual cycle is centered around ovulation. In the case of an IVF cycle ovulation does not take place. Instead, when your eggs reach maturation, they are retrieved and fertilised in the IVF lab.
Acupuncture IVF support
We also provide acupuncture IVF support at our clinic. Research suggests that acupuncture can increase the success rates of IVF, although the reasons why are not yet fully understood. However, it has been shown that acupuncture can improve blood flow to the uterus which in turn may provide a better and more conducive environment for embryo implantation.
Pregnancy though a beautiful occurrence in life can also prove to be quite stressful. In addition to increased blood flow, acupuncture can help put you at ease during the whole process. For expert acupuncture IVF support make sure to get in touch with our team, they have undergone all the necessary training to guide you through the natural IVF cycle steps.
The case for IVF support
Having been honoured with the opportunity to work with hundreds of couples preparing for IVF over the last 20 years or so, I have seen a significant increase in the likelihood of a successful IVF cycle and a healthy baby to couples who embrace a carefully developed Natural IVF Support program 3-4 months before starting IVF.
While ART focuses mostly on a transport problem, i.e. getting a sperm and egg together so that fertilisation can take place; it does not address is the quality of the sperm, egg or the embryo, or the quality of the uterine lining in which the embryo is to thrive. Australian, American and UK research shows that correct preconception health care can increase IVF success rates by between 50% and 63%.
Naturopath support treatments during IVF specifically focus on preparing both you and your partner so that the healthier egg and sperm come together at fertilisation to create an embryo that then burrows deeply into a lush, nutrient rich uterine lining resulting in a stronger more viable conception. The Foresight study in the UK (2002-2009) found 3-4 months of preconception care more than doubled the success rates for IVF.
What can a preconception IVF Support Program do to help the outcome of an IVF Cycle?
• Enhance the egg quality; energy to begin division, cell membrane and ability to accept sperm.
• Improve sperm count, morphology, motility and DNA integrity
• Modulate FSH production which can be raised and may cause cancellation of IVF cycles.
• Improve response to IVF drugs and reduce negative side effects.
• Modulate the immune response which can cause rejection of the embryo.
• Support the nervous system and adrenal function during and after the procedure.
Is naturopathic treatment compatible with ART procedures and the drugs used?
A naturopathic preconception program is compatible with Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) when managed by adequately trained practitioners. There are many herbs that should not be taken at the same time as the drugs prescribed during a natural IVF cycle, there are also many remedies that are safe and effective during the cycle. This must be carefully managed by your practitioner which will support your best/ possible outcome. It also emphasises the importance of ensuring your chosen practioner is extensively experienced and appropriately qualified to assist you.
The aim of my IVF Support program is to integrate and compliment your IVF cycle in a holistic manner, ensuring a genetically healthy conception, a healthy pregnancy and birth and a bright, happy, healthy baby.
