Are You Running on the Right Fuel?

By Sam Botica, Naturopath

“You wouldn’t pull up to the service station and knowingly put the wrong fuel into your car.”

It’s something I say to patients often.

We’re careful with our cars. We know the wrong fuel will cause problems, sometimes immediately. But when it comes to our bodies, the effects of our fuel choices aren’t always so obvious.

Sometimes, the “wrong fuel” doesn’t break us down overnight. Instead, it shows up gradually with low energy, brain fog, digestive discomfort, hormonal changes, or feeling just a little bit off.

And, it’s not just about what you’re eating.

When your “fuel tank” gets disrupted

Even if you generally eat well, there are plenty of common, everyday factors that can affect how your body processes and responds to food.

Things like:

• Ongoing stress
• Illness or recovery from infection
• Injury or increased physical demand
• Travel or holidays with different foods and routines
• Changes in sleep or lifestyle
• Exposure to parasites or gut infections

All of these can disrupt your digestion, your gut microbiome, potentially cause deficiencies in certain nutrients, and your body’s ability to properly digest the nutrients you are taking in.

So you might be eating the “right” foods but not getting the full benefit from them.

Gut health is where everything starts

A lot of my work centres around gut health, because it underpins so many aspects of wellbeing.

Your gut is responsible for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and acting as a key part of your immune system. When it’s out of balance, it can contribute to:

• Bloating, discomfort, or irregular digestion
• Food sensitivities or allergies
• Increased inflammation
• Fatigue and poor recovery

Sometimes these issues develop gradually, especially after periods of stress or illness, and people don’t always connect the dots.

The gut–brain connection

One of the most important (and often overlooked) pieces is how closely the gut and brain are linked.

Your gut helps regulate neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine—chemicals that influence your mood, motivation levels, and mental clarity.

When gut health is compromised, it can show up as:

• Anxiety or low mood
• Difficulty concentrating
• Feeling overwhelmed or mentally fatigued

Many people assume these are purely “mental health” issues, when in reality, there’s often a physiological component that needs support.

It’s not just about avoiding the “wrong” foods

Of course, if you have a known allergy or intolerance, avoiding trigger foods is essential.

But beyond that, it’s about making sure your body is:

• Receiving the nutrients it needs
• Digesting and absorbing them effectively
• Maintaining a balanced gut environment

Because even subtle imbalances, over time, can start to impact your hormones, immune system, and overall energy levels.

Supporting your system

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s awareness and the right support for your body over time - which can differ over time too!

If you’ve noticed changes in your energy, digestion, mood, or overall health, it may be worth looking at how your body is responding to the fuel you’re giving it.

When you come in for a consultation, we might look at:

• Identifying hidden food sensitivities - you might be surprised!
• Supporting gut repair and microbiome balance
• Addressing underlying parasites, infections or imbalances
• Rebuilding any depleted nutrient levels

When to seek support

If things don’t feel quite right, or you feel like your body isn’t responding the way it used to, it’s often a sign that something needs attention - just like when you'd take your car in for a service or get the mechanic to check out that strange noise!

A more personalised, naturopathic approach that takes in all the factors can make a huge difference, getting to the root cause, and supporting multiple areas for a faster more effective result. No bandaid solutions here!

The goal isn’t just to eat “healthy”. It’s to make sure your body can actually use that fuel effectively.

If you’d like support with gut health, allergies, or understanding how your nutrition is impacting your energy and mental wellbeing, you can book a consultation with me here..
